West
Fresno School District is located in the heart of California's
Central Valley. Our district is composed of one physical location,
with three individual school sites. We pride ourself in the district's
focus on academic excellence and learning.
Part of what makes us unique is our diversity. The
West Fresno Elementary District is located southwest of the city
of Fresno, California. The community is a mix of single-family
dwellings and apartment buildings. The district serves approximately1,000
students, 641 in kindergarten to fifth grade, and 359 in sixth,
seventh, and eighth grades.
The schools in the district are:
West
Fresno Elementary (Grades K-5)
West Fresno Middle School (Grades 6-8)
The
schools are housed in two adjacent campuses. The middle school
campus also houses district administration offices.
Student
ethnic trends since the late 1980s show significant increases
in two ethnic groups: the Hispanic/Latino subgroup, which grew
from 36.4% in 1987/88 to 45.6% in 2000-2001, and the Asian subgroup,
.8% in 1987/88 to 16.3% in 2000-2001. The African American subgroup
has experienced a decline from 59.2% in 1987/88 to 31.1% in 2000-2001.
This shift has resulted in a parallel increase in the number of
English Language Learners, which currently stands at 38.2% of
the student population.
During
the school year 2001-2003, West Fresno Elementary was taken over
by the State of California as mandated by Assembly Bill 38. This
legislation has removed the power of the governing board of education
and placed the school district under the direction of the State
Superintendent of Instruction for a maximum of two years. Assembly
Bill 38 has also mandated a recovery plan developed by the district
and a fiscal crisis and management team. This LEA plan is a critical
component of the recovery plan.
